Open letter to  BenjiRich Here is why Creatives like us need to own this album!

Saturday, November 11th,  after a long few weeks of meetings and ups and downs, my husband who was born and raised in the “D” switched our Sirius radio from talk radio to music per my request!   I hated much of what I heard so he continued to skim until we landed on Shade 45. That moment while I was venting about a situation something magical happened!  A song called True came on and I freaked out because I saw the name DJ ASSAULT (Huge fan of his music) then I read the other names Royce Da 5’9” (Detroit rap legend), RSXGLD, and JMSN.  Hubby and I immediately stopped talking and focused more on the Detroit catch phrases in the song.  Royce Da 5’9”  comes on and we both were geeked (Excited) because we do not hear many Detroit artist on the airwaves, or in the clubs aside from  Big Sean and Dej Loaf we immediately  wondered who was RSXGLD, when did this song come out and why are we just hearing their song TRUE!

True Featuring Royce Da 5’9″, JMSN, DJ Assault

Just as the song was coming to an end my husband said, “Nat,”  I wish they would have added some Jit to this song, as soon as my husband said, “Jit” the rhythm switched to 808’s and Detroit techno/Jit, we both were shouting as if our favorite athlete made a score!  The moment that rhythm changed it reminded me of when I lived in Toronto and had a girls weekend July 1st Canada Day and July 4th Independence Day with Ernestine to visit Nicole (Carlos Rogers cousin In-Law). That was the weekend Destiny’s Child had a concert and the Club was packed to see Beyoncé, Kelly, Latavia Roberson and Letoya Luckett.

It also brought me back to the days when I worked in Fairlane Mall at Coach with Tanya, Nakisha, Adriana, Deon, Kimica and Cyntara.  I enjoyed my days  living in Detroit and Farmington Hills driving Downtown Detroit on the Jefferson Freeway in the tunnel during 4th of July Weekend with my best friend Nicole.   After hours on the East Side where you can only get in with secret knocks on the door!  8 mile,  7 mile and SouthField Freeway,  Lodge 10 Freeway, Northland Mall, Wing Dings at Crystals, Fish Fry’s with our family, 2 for $60.00 Moët and Chandon, Better Made hot chips, and getting my hair done by Otha White.  While the visuals rapidly went through my mind of my time living in Detroit I quickly searched for the song on iTunes and tweeted about it before I started my shift at work!  Thank you Ro Spit and 14KT for painting beautiful memories with your words and for sharing your art with the world!

Here I am today Sunday, November 12th

Listening to the entire album for the first time this morning and I realize why I am so drawn to it!  This album is the soundtrack to my current mood! It’s  a reminder to creatives like us to focus on what’s  important, do not get distracted by negativity and that steadfastness is key!  Spectators watch what you are doing, get inspired by it and create it for themselves without acknowledgment.   The spectators  don’t realize that when you finally reach your peak it’s because of all of the sweat, tears and endurance that it took. BenjiRich  the formula that we create remains silent, many won’t celebrate you when you get there and get uptight while  they watch you accomplish your dreams.  Check these songs out and let me know what you think!

My favorite songs were selected based on how it related to me and what I am going through on my path to greatness and dodging B.S

RSXGLD album are:

True

“I laced them boot straps and got my ass up! I ain’t never going back”
Days and Nights of hard work and sacrifice!

“You reminisce I remember”
“N a product of Reganomics slaving for dollars”
The mentality that was forced on many and they were lost and turnt out!  In my current situation when people try to keep up with the Jones’s and do wicked things to take money away from some of us honest hard workers to pay the bills of what they tried to keep up with!

Quotes that sound like Benji Rich and my conversation

“Like,  (blank) think,  (Blank) think we doing ish just to be doing it, like we ain’t got a method to it you feel?”  I will explain this to you via phone but I think that you already know how we get down like Voltron Phase 2 almost complete!

“For real this ain’t got nothing to do with us!  This coming from a higher place, that means there’s more at stake, so it’s more to hate! This ‘ish more than great!”  God bless us

I Believe

Belief in our visions and crushing our goals!

What’s Happenin’  Brutha
Anyone who lost a loved one will relate to this!  I remember calling insurance companies, the government and lawyers December 2007 when the tragedy in our family happened.

Thought Bubble

“We live next to the demons and heathens”

“The thoughts in my mind flying like a car with a drift”

Natalie: Congratulations on your successful music career. What is your key to longevity?

Danny Woods: God, keep God first!

Natalie: Your fans do an amazing job of posting your music dating all the way back from the 1960’s! How many records did you release and how many music groups were you in?

Danny Woods: They asked me to be in the Spinners, but I turned it down because I was making money on my own. I would say that I am on about 50 records.

Natalie: How old were you when you signed your first record deal?

Danny Woods: I was about 19.

Natalie: Maintaining a healthy voice is a full time job. What’s your best practice to exercising and keeping your 6 octave vocal range healthy?

Danny Woods: The more you sing the better you can sing.

Natalie: What was the feeling that you pulled to hit that high register during the song “Danny Boy?”

Danny Woods: I was singing that song for my son Danny that’s why I sing it so good I was singing to my son.

Natalie: What was it like being in a premier group for Holland Dozier Holland?

Danny Woods: It was tough, I did not get paid.

Natalie: How did you celebrate being number 3 on the Billboard Charts and selling over 1 Million copies for “Give me just a little more time?”

Danny Woods: I did not celebrate because I did not have any money.  I was on the Johnny Carson show and Soul Train several times.

La Musica Part 1

Two music enthusiasts talk about their love for music while Natalie from Luxshop4u plays her favorite songs from her iTunes selection.  In the past Natalie’s love for music has afforded her the opportunity to suggest her favorite 1970s songs to a Grammy nominated artist for his show.  Producer Extraordinaire Jorgie Milliano worked with several chart topping latin artist.

Billy Paul’s song Let the Dollar Circulate is playing in the background the horn and drum section sparks curiosity.

Natalie: Que Pasa mi amigo?  What is this sound that I am hearing?  This drum pattern is bananas!  Diga me, Analog vs Digital?

Jorge: Analog, the benefit of using analog is the pure sound that you hear.  There are several takes in today’s market, Music Executives want music produced rapido.  The negative side to this is that digital is pre recorded and the drum kits sound the same.  I would not recommend it.

Natalie: Ok, listen to this Foundation Roots by Patrick Kelly!  What is this echo that I am hearing?  I have heard it on many of my dads foundation 45 albums. *Foundation is a term that we use for classic older reggae music.

Jorge: It’s called dub platting analog delay.  Dub delays do not necessarily need to be on the keys or instrument, it can also be on the vocals.

We are currently listening to Funky Kingston by Toots & The Maytals

Natalie: Tell me about this guitar technique!

Jorge: The technique is Called guitar skin it is prevalent in ska music.

Natalie: Danny Woods formerly of The Chairmen of The Board and The Showmen is a Cammy awards recipient.  During his time performing over 40 years with the Chairmen of the Board they enjoyed success on the Billboard Music charts and they were also inducted to the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame.  Give me just a little more time was sampled by Kylie Minogue. On his solo album Aries the song Two can be Lonely is one of my favorite songs by him. How can we turn this into a club banger?  My husband is from Detroit and we listened to a lot of Jit music.  There is a song that samples Godzilla with the Detroit Techno I think that the beginning of the Godzilla rhythem the songs horn section would sound amazing on Two can be lonely if it is looped the right way!  What do you think?

Jorge: Nat, thats awesome!  EDM’s can be created its called sampling!  How do you even know this terminology?

Natalie: I just know what I like and it makes sense to me.

Mary J.Blige Be Happy is now playing

Natalie: Man I am obsessed with the flutes I think Chuckie Booker was on the flutes!

Jorge: You are listening to Pan flutes! Flutes can also be simulated on a keyboard.  Nat, this is great we need to do this again!

Natalie: Let’s reconvene but this time we will focus on your music!

Jorge: Let’s do it!
